These are my top tips to save money on your weekly grocery shop.
I curbed our weekly grocery shop of over $300 to feed my family of four for $150.
Here is how:
- Meal planning – not planning your meals weekly is the easiest way to over spend. View my sample meal plans and recipes here.
- Write a shopping list and stick to it.
- Use catalogues to shop specials, plan meals around these (access catalogues online).
- Buy fruit and vegetables based on what is in season and don’t be afraid to buy frozen.
- Frozen vegetables are great as you don’t need to worry about their shelf life, they are excellent quality (frozen in their prime) and they can be much cheaper.
- Look for generic brand alternatives, more often they taste as good if not better than their branded competitors. I love Woolworths branded products.
- Don’t over stock on toiletries/products that you know go on sale often. No use having your money tied under your sink, 2-3 of each product is more than enough.
- Limit consumption of packaged options. Make your own schnitzels, grate your own cheese, shred your own cabbage. These changes can make a significant saving and taste better!
- Take advantage of apps like cashrewards and earn a discount off your shop. I save 5% on my Woolworths orders (please note cashrewards have stopped this discount as of the 30th of November 2020 until further notice).
- Utilise your membership program, do not activate offers or buy products that you normally wouldn’t for the sake of points.
- Shop online – hear me out. Although some products may be dearer, you can see your total spend as you add items to your cart which makes you mindful of what you need. It also means there is zero temptation (from yourself or other family members) and no unnecessary extras coming home.
- Plan at least one meat free meal a week – good for the environment and your pocket.
- Shop your fridge, pantry, freezer first (plan meals around what you have first).
- Avoid recipes that require special ingredients – stick to the basics.
