Beginners guide to essential oils

If you are overwhelmed by the options when it comes to essential oils, you are not alone. You may find you need a lot less than you think.

Why use essential oils?

A year ago now I decided I was done with toxins in my home. I urged simplicity. I craved less numbers in the food I was preparing for my family and a greater awareness of what was in our cleaning products and toiletries.

My extent of essential oil use was eucalyptus oil for cleaning. I turned up my nose initially, I struggled with the ‘salesy’ push of oils on social media and had zero understanding of their capability.

I started my essential oils journey by making a massage oil. I had received some lavender oil as a gift and one night strategically thought I would make it into a massage oil only in an attempt to get a massage in return… and it worked!

Aside from being very happy with my cunning plan, I thought nothing of the oil I had made at the time.

The little spray bottle sat on my bedside table. I found myself reaching for it at bedtime – the scent was calming and relaxing. I rubbed the oil into my temples and behind my neck. After the speed and intensity of the day, it became my little ritual. I still do it to this day and find it soothing and comforting. I’ve since learnt lavender oil is specifically known to help with tension, panic, nervous exhaustion, anxiety, improve sleep and is helpful for muscular aches and pains… the list goes on.

The benefits

I now understand the benefits of essential oils are beyond a pleasant smell. They can provide a multitude of physical and psychological health benefits. There is evidence that suggests essential oils can aid in treating viral and bacterial infections, as well as provide relief from pain and sleeping difficulties. Oils are also said to improve our mood and general well-being. The powerful antibacterial, antiviral and antiseptic properties in essential oils make them an essential addition to DIY home natural cleaning products.

My top tip

My top tip as a beginner is to keep it simple. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed and caught up in choice. A few versatile oils are all you need to create blends that suit a variety of uses including household and personal. 

Here are my favourite oils and some ways I use them

Eucalyptus oil 

Eucalyptus oil is a powerful disinfectant with antiviral and antiseptic properties. Commonly used in deep cleaning for the treatment of colds and flu, this oil can be used in a variety of ways. 

Glass cleaner: Equal parts cooled boiled water and white vinegar with a few drops of eucalyptus oil make an inexpensive, powerful, streak free glass cleaner without the chemicals. Read more here

Removing sticky residue: Apply a few drops of eucalyptus oil to the residue, rub in, allow it to sit for a few minutes and then use a microfibre cloth to easily remove. 

As a powerful floor cleaner: 10 drops of eucalyptus oil combined with ½ cup of white vinegar and hot water leave floors shiny, clean and grease free.

Lemon oil

Lemon oil is a natural antiseptic with antibacterial and anti-infectious properties. The aroma of lemon makes this a refreshing addition to household DIY cleaning.

Multipurpose surface cleaner: Castile soap combined with lemon essential oil makes a powerful, all natural multipurpose cleaning spray without harsh chemicals. Find my 3 ingredient DIY natural multipurpose cleaning spray recipe here.

Banish odour: Sprinkle 1 tsp of bicarbonate soda along with 3 drops of essential oil in the bottom of your kitchen bin to naturally neutralise and remove odours.

Fabric softener: White vinegar is the perfect natural fabric softener. It naturally softens and reduces wrinkles in clothing. Use undiluted white vinegar in your fabric softener compartment with 3 drops of lemon essential oil to cleanse and leave a fresh scent on your clothing. 

Lavender oil 

Lavender oil is the ultimate calming and soothing oil, commonly known for its calming effect, lavender oil also has powerful antibacterial and deodorising properties. 

Room spray: Create your own natural, calming room spray by combining 1 cup of cooled boiled water, 10-15 drops of lavender essential oil and 1 tsp of salt. The salt helps the oil and water combine. 

Body wash & hand wash: Cooled boiled water, Castile soap, fractionated coconut oil and essential oils create an incredible body wash and hand wash especially when combined in a foaming dispenser. Naturally cleansing and relaxing. 

Massage oil: A carrier oil of choice (like fractionated coconut oil) combined with essential oils make an incredible massage oil

Peppermint oil 

Peppermint oil is beautifully fresh, cooling and invigorating. Peppermint oil is known for treating coughs, colds, reducing pain, improving mental function and reducing stress.

Diffuse: A few drops in the diffuser helps to purify the air and prevent the spread of airborne pathogens. 

Foot scrub: Simply mix 1 tbsp each of sugar, coconut oil and 3 drops of peppermint essential oil. Massage into your feet before rinsing dry for an invigorating, softening foot scrub.

Shower: Drop 2-3 drops of peppermint oil in the corner of your shower and let the steam do all the work. A therapeutic way to end or start the day.
